Political Song for Condi Rice to Sing

bush_halo.jpg

On this day of narrow-eyed reckoning and obscene self-congratulation (arrgh! thanks, Aaron), I thought I'd share my newfound favourite recent political song. No recording that I know of - if anybody has a bead on a download, do tell. Conor-hatas, keep yer own counsel (more on that tomorrow).

WHEN THE PRESIDENT TALKS TO GOD
Bright Eyes (Conor Oberst)

When the president talks to God,
are the conversations brief or long?
Does he ask to rape our womens' rights
or to send poor farm kids off to die?
Will the president recommend an oil hike
when the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God,
are the words he chooses hard or soft?
Is he resolute all down the line?
Is every issue black or white?
Does what God says ever change his mind,
when the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God,
does he fake that drawl or merely nod?
Agree which convicts should be killed?
Where the prison's built and filled?
Which voter fraud must be concealed,
when the president talks to God?

When the president talks to God,
I wonder which one plays the better cop:
"We should find some jobs the ghetto's broke."
"No, they're lazy, George, I say we don't.
Just give 'em more liquor stores and dirty coke."
That's what God recommends,
when the president talks to God.

When the president talks to God,
do they drink near-beer and go play golf,
when they pick which country we should invade
and which Muslim souls still can be saved?
Yeah I guess God just calls a spade a spade,
when the president talks to God.

When the president talks to God,
does he ever think that maybe he's not?
That that voice is just inside his head
when he kneels down in the presidential bed?
Does he ever smell his own bullshit
when the president talks to God?

I doubt it.

You can use a p2p program to download a live version of that song. Although it appears as if Conor is quite drunken singing it and makes a slight mistake he redoes. Anyway you could probably find it there.. if you really want i may be able to send it.

The Daily Show had a count and in his inaugural speech he apparently used the word "freedom" 27 times and "liberty" something like 15, in about 20 minutes. (Jon Stewart said (I paraphrase), " 'Freedom' scored a decisive win over 'liberty,' who's been playing hurt ever since the Patriot Act. 'Freedom' will now go on to face 'justice' in the Clichebowl.")

I believe he referred to the *force* of freedom in that speech.

My favourite parts in the president's speech today referred to the need to spread freedom in other parts of the world BEFORE focusing on freedom at home, and then the bit where he urged young americans to work towards something that matters and basically suggested that they join the armed forces. INCREDIBLE!! And it was SO amazing that he could throw around the word FREEDOM so much while at the same time denying homosexuals the affectation of marriage. Astounding, just simply incredible.
