Stop This Crap Now

oscar_peterson3.jpg

If Oscar Peterson really leaves the country at 80 years of age because of the racist abuse he's getting from local yahoos, it will be one ugly stain on Canada. One would hope Mr. Peterson knows how much the country as a whole honours him and he wouldn't let a few suburban assholes change that. But if not, we have to let him know again. Public officials, take a break from your holidays and speak the hell up.

Jon B,

You should be ashamed of yourself, spreading your ignorant drivel over the internet. Only a backwoods hick would be narrowminded enough to make a blanket statement about the diverse people of Canada, categorizing us all as backwoods hicks. Your ignorance really isn't helping anyone...AND NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR YOUR BULLSHIT!

DagsH (A Proud, Educated Canadian...and not an exception, there are a lot of us in Canada, thank you very much Jon B)

Didn't mean to make anyone gag...sorry. Always forget that sarcasm doesn't work on messageboards.

I just wanted to add that Canada is essentially a backwoods country of hicks, with a few exceptions. A lot of us forget this.

I grew up in New Brunswick, and it is shocking to think of some of the language/slurs that were common when I was a kid. Recently, we hosted a birthday for our niece here in Ottawa, and our jaws dropped a couple of times, listening to the nasty names the mixed crowd of girls would call each other. The more things change...

The best we can all hope for is that as our country becomes more and more diverse, attitudes will change, and people will become more culturally aware/sensitive. I think we've come a long way, actually, but it's events like this that remind me that we've still got a long way to go.

I would like to say that, above all else, I respect Mr. Peterson very much, both as a musician and an ambassador of Canadian cultural excellence. I'm puzzled, however, at his reaction to this incident, at least as far as I understand it. It's fair to say that this kind of fleeting encounter with obnoxiousness, rascist or not, may be experienced wherever one may choose to live. Ignorance lives in every city, in every one the world's countries, and it seems to me somewhat naive to expect to live a life entirely devoid of any contact with it. It's possible that these hooligans aren't even aware of Mr. Peterson's celebrity status, and part of me is dissapointed in Mr. Peterson's blanket statements about living in Canada, as though the thoughtlessness of a handful of suburban miscreants is really representative of Canadian attitude, or our attitude about Mr. Peterson and his work. I don't feel that celebrities should necessarily expect to be any more exempt from these kinds of experiences than anyone else, and anyone, living anywhere, can attest to this kind of thing happening to them at least once.

Police say a weekend shouting incident outside the home of legendary jazz pianist Oscar Peterson does not appear to have been racially motivated. Peel police Constable Craig Platt says officers were called to Peterson's Mississauga home Saturday after he reported someone shouting racial taunts outside his Toronto-area home. But Platt says that after speaking to Peterson's wife, it appears the shouting was not racially charged, although it remains unclear what sparked the incident.

A lot of black people live in Missisauga.

The incident was racial. Peterson has even said so himself comparing it to what he saw touring the south of the US decades ago (on CBC's the National).

Happy to have left Missicaca,

-G.

Racial, nope. Conclusions, jumped. Mississauga, sucks.

Uh...the incident was racial in nature regardless of what the family reports...it might have the added cachet of 'let's dis a famous person' but the chances of this happening to a white famous person is almost zero....and any 'Charge of the White Brigade' is necessary because that's the community where that psychoshit comes from...we can't deal with your assholes much, besides acts of self defence...write open letters to the papers and govts and show your support and compassion for oscar and yes to funding initiatives to make racism a socially unacceptable act in our country and any country we deal with..

The Toronto indie scene should put on some kind of benefit to express its outrage at this kind of behaviour.

You might even get a black person or two to show up.

Regardless, seems there's no need for the Charge of the White Brigade since the as article states clearly, "the family had not reported the incident as racial in nature."

As for public officials "speaking up", I don't think we need anymore rhetoric about race from our them. If McGuinty wants to announce that he's reinstating all the programs that had been cut during the Harris years, fantastic, if not, he can should save his breath.

My first thought on reading this story was Steve Harper should go to Oscar's home and tell him the whole of Canada is in support of him and is outraged at these incidents. It'd be a great photo-op for the PM, and would send a message.

Mississauga Goddamn!

I presume this comment is some kind of joke. It certainly made me gag...I'm shocked by the news of this, at least the IQ quote indicates he recognizes that bottom feeders are behind the actions against him and his family, but it would be a shame to lose a national treasure because of some bored suburban fuckheads looking for a fight. I remember sitting on the Finch bus one day while a drunken asshole berrated a sikh gentleman for taking his job. I didn't do anything but apologize to the man and his son for the behaviour. I have always thought that I should kicked the shit out of the son of bitch and thrown him off the bus...despite what the repercussions would have been...nowadays I'd probably just stare him down and wait for him to take a swing at me...but that's how it goes. Hindsight and all that. By any means necessary...or something like that...

Oscar lives in Mississauga, which was pretty white last time I looked. Hell, I wouldn't feel comfortable there. Maybe he should move downtown!
