Get Clicky

mountain_goats.jpg

I almost never do this, but I wasn't happy with last night's Mountain Goats post and removed it - I've got a cold and my thinking seemed more than a little fuzzy. I'll revisit some of my ideas about the new album another time, when I'm less befogged. But I still wanted to share a couple of the links: John Darnielle had a fascinating piece in the Los Angeles Times over the weekend about the creation of Get Lonely and the difficulty he had following up on The Sunset Tree. He's also posted a mix of some of his favourite songs-of-the-year-thus-far on current Last Plane to Jakarta, which will make you run out to buy a bunch of records you've probably never heard of. (One of his picks is Winnipeg's Christine Fellows, who'll be touring with him this fall: "Nobody else is writing at Christine’s level.") And later today the first in a series of YouTube videos, "YouTube Presents: Sessions at Amoeba featuring the Mountain Goats," including an interview between Darnielle and Carl Newman of the New Pornographers, is due to be posted. (I thought it would be up by now.)

And now I'm off to make Neo-Citron.

You're right about the Snakes stuff. I just pulled it down as part of the whole; I'll restore it with the revised version of the rest. My appreciation of Dan's documentary work is the same as ever.

You mentioned why you edited your thoughts about the Mountain Goats, but why did you delete your reference to Dan Burke's eulogy of the Deadly Snakes (from which came the original title of your post)? I thought it was an impressive recollection of the Snakes & running clubs in Toronto, and the honesty of his writing is admirable. I know its your blog & you can do what you want with it, but it surprised me to see what appeared to be a rather innocuous sentence or two erased with the other MG remarks.

Anyways, I enjoy your writing and I hope you're feeling better.

YouTube pulled the plug on the Mountain Goats promo for reasons unclear to me. But 4AD is now looking for somewhere else to host them - hopefully they'll find a home someplace.

Carl,

I agree with Jeff; the original post was clear; and I know not from off grammar. Ungelled theses are what blogging's *for*. Then again, instant deletion is a great freedom of blogging too.

And I also agree with you about Destination Out. I need to update my links page. OK then, I will.

Thanks for the links to Darnielle's stuff. Very interested that he wants to swerve from ironic sardonicism in the wake of the real-life impacts of his last record. Bless him.

No, it wasn't so much the personal-life stuff, just that I felt like my remarks had been groping toward a thesis that hadn't quite gelled, and the grammar was off, and little things like that. It will reappear revised sometime soon. Thanks for the consoling remarks - and the shared WSABH fandom. Everybody, Destination Out is a great blog you should go read right now. It remains in the "latest links" section in the Zoilus sidebar, which I haven't gotten 'round to updating in a while.

I read your previous post and it didn't seem fuzzy headed at all. I was glad to see someone coming to grips with the slippery "Get Lonesome" in a detailed way. Were you chastened by the comment about speculations on Darnielle's private life?

Hope you'll revisit the album soon - there hasn't been much written about it that does justice to its charms, difficulties, and potential disappointments. Also glad to see you rate "We Shall All Be Healed" so highly. It's always seemed like Darnielle's most accomplished work to me - each verse verring off in five different directions simulataneously - but I'd yet to find anyone who shared that opinion.

Anyhow - thanks

Jeff
